week #1- idea

As a student coming from London to a new city i have experienced a few changes in culture. One of the main differences that i have noticed, being a particularly social person, is the difference between the social activities in London compared to those in Syracuse. Being part of a University has meant that weekend social activities are somewhat governed by certain groups, in particular i have noticed the Greek societies on campus. Many of the students enjoy the Greek activities that are organized, but a lack of information regarding exactly what is happening and when, along with a lack of forward planning from many students has led to the repetition of the same night over and over for many students; walking up and down in front of the fraternity houses, not knowing which one is which, and what is happening where.
So i am proposing to design and create an iPhone application that is based around a map of the Greek Societies, along with many of the sports houses etc, which allows users to identify where they are in relation to certain houses, search for certain houses or obtain directions from a "current location" feature, along with allowing users to update information about where they are in real time. The application will allow users to identify whether the particular event is open to all, or guest list only, whether there is alcohol, and if so what type (Kegs, cans, liqueurs etc). Users will also be able to update information about entry fees, sizes of the parties, ratios (boys:girls), and music types, along with dress codes and the number of people attending.
Anyone should be able to post/update an event, however the initial posting will be stylized in a way that encourages the particular house to post, instead of individual users, as this could result in multiple "virtual" events being created for the same actual event. This application also allows an opportunity for connection with other social networking applications such as Facebook, twitter and foursquare, as it draws upon features from each. However to ensure privacy, the connection with these other applications is strictly through acceptance only.

  1. This line made me laugh as i think back to my freshman year, "walking up and down in front of the fraternity houses, not knowing which one is which, and what is happening where." you're absolutely right, every student goes through the same problem and the one person, usually an upper classman that has figured it out is almost sacred. The only concern of an app like this would be to ensure that it doesn't get into the wrong hands such that party throwers don't want to advertise their product. I am sure there are ways around this though.

  2. I love this idea. The issue that no one knows exactly what is going on until 11:30 pm right before we go out is definitely a prevalent one. I like that you took an issue that not many are willing to address simply because Greeks can at times be intimidating. I hope that this app is created before I graduate.

  3. This is really fun idea. It's practical. I think this is possible through integrating with big social networks like Facebook with their event organizing feature but application specific for Greek & parties through campus would be great. If it works as you described here and are customized for each universities & colleges, I think there are lot of potential. With location services and social networking getting smarter and better, timing of this idea is perfect. I like it !!

  4. This is so creative! If this application were actually made I think it would be very successful. I think this application could also prevent a lot of people from getting trouble because it could help people be aware of parties that are getting too big that might be busted. I am sure a lot of people would enjoy this app as much as I would.

  5. I really like this idea considering the constant scenario a freshman guy falls into of not knowing where to go and not having a sufficient ratio to get into a party. However, there is already a concept very much like this that uses social networking rather than an application. The specificity of yours has an edge over the social networking competitor. One problem I see you running into is the human error of frats not updating what parties they have or embellishing what is going on at the parties.

  6. This idea is awesome! For everyone, but especially freshmen. I remember my first week going out walking around comstock looking like an idiot trying to find a party to go to. If we had something like this me and my friends could have save the embarrassment of getting shut down by multiple frats. Good work on this project!
